The 9th Art Submissions Guidelines for Contributors
At 9th Art we’re pretty much game for anything you come up with and encourage people to be as innovative as possible. Nevertheless, here are a few guidelines and suggestions for submissions if you are interested in contributing, just to let you know a few things we’ll specifically be looking for. But first...

DEADLINES
We understand that everyone has a busy schedule. What we are asking is that by the 1st March, if you want want artwork included in the next printed issue you’ll need to submit a contribution or at least a draft script or sketch, and we’ll give you the holiday to draw it up.

We look forward to receiving all your submissions soon!

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
- Contributions MUST be a minimum 300 dpi, translating to a pixel size of roughly 2400x3400 pixels for a full page submission (in general the more pixels the better).
- Full page contributions should have a 1.4:1 aspect ratio (height to width).
- sRGB is preferred to AdobeRGB but if this means nothing to you, don’t worry.
- Scanned images are fine although to save us time we would ask that they are levels corrected to ensure that blacks are black and whites are white.
- Format wise try and stick to .jpeg and make sure that they’re saved at as high a quality setting as possible but please limit file sizes to no more than 10mb per page if you’re emailing images to us.
- All image files should be sent to editors@9thartmagazine.com as well as articles.
ALL SUBMISSIONS
- NARRATIVE - Contributions with narratives that are either comic, surreal or tragic will be appreciated. If you find yourself stuck for a story go the the contributors’ facebook page and find someone to collaborate with. Alternatively, email us as we’ve got lots of writers looking for illustrators to collaborate with.
- SATIRICAL COMICS - Because there’s always lots to satirise.
- POETRY - Whether it’s a comic haiku with a panel per line or a limerick depicted via the medium of drawing.
- DIARY COMICS - Perhaps draw a comic as a substitute for keeping a travel blog or daily journal.
- RECURRING STRIPS: If someone has a pitch for a recurring strip or story this would be great!
They can be any length (4 panels to 4 pages), full colour or black and white.
THEMED SUBMISSIONS
The theme for the next issue will be ‘FRONTIER’.
We’re especially looking out for submissions from people who are inspired by the theme or feature the theme in their work. Themed submissions follow the same guidelines as the general submissions.
One of the themed submissions will ultimately make it onto our front cover, and the artist will get an interview feature - so get drawing!
ONLINE SUBMISSIONS
Last time around, we found that loads of people loved the magazine and wanted to contribute, but felt they didn’t have enough time to dedicate to a contribution or were uneasy about their style.
So: we’re trying to come up with ways to just simply get people doodling!
We’re starting up our blog, and we’ll be featuring submissions / ideas / musings on a regular basis. There’ll also be a few regular features starting up before the end of term. Here’s some of the regulars we’re launching;
- ‘Guess Who’ - Can you guess the lecturer from the doodle on the lecture notes
- ‘A week in the life of...’ - Anyone can ask to be our featured artist of the week where you’ll get a mini-interview and we’ll feature a drawing of yours every day!
- Word inspiration - We’ll be giving anyone the option to just post a word on the wall of facebook page and then let everyone post back their response which should be drawn in 30 seconds!
They are meant to be fun and a bit silly, so don’t worry about taking loads of time over it or stuff like image quality, just email us a photo of your doodle! - Also, any submissions we get that don’t make it into a printed issue will be displayed in our online gallery.
ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS/WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS
We’re looking for some longer pieces to run as articles online and in the issue. As ever, we’re open to ideas, but you might want to try some of these.
- Essays on a specific comic genre or comic writer or comic that you have a particular interest in.
- A mixed-media review of the album and the artwork!
- [YOUR IDEA HERE] - Anything you think would interest our readers
COPYRIGHT
All images remain the property of the original artist, and we’ll always ask permission if we wish to use your artwork for publicity purposes.
